Typology In Motion
Typology In Motion
Ruth 4:15-22 15 And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee, which is better to thee than seven sons, hath born him. 16 And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it. 17 And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David. 18 Now these are the generations of Pharez: Pharez begat Hezron, 19 And Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab, 20 And Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon, 21 And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed, 22 And Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.
Verses 14-22 – When we recount the life of Joseph, we see similarities between Joseph and Naomi. Naomi had to go through so much before her destiny became apparent to her. We read in verse 16 “And Naomi took the child, and laid it on her bosom, and became nurse unto it”
Naomi nursing the child seems very odd to me, after all, it was Ruth who gave birth to him. Why did Naomi nurse him? Naomi took him as her own son, but why? The answer to this will be answered as we go through the “typology” of Ruth.
Verse 18 – Yet again, we see the genealogy starting with Pharez. Why was Jesus born in Bethlehem?
Luke 2:4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea unto the city of David, which is in Bethlehem, (because he was of the house and the lineage of David).
Ruth and Boaz are the reason that Jesus was born in Bethlehem fulfilling prophecy. Jesus could not be born in Nazareth – had to be Bethlehem. What follows now is a beautiful prophetic picture of the typology we see in Ruth and how it all points to our greater than Boaz Redeemer Jesus Christ.
OBED & JESUS: Obed is himself a type of Christ. Obed was the only begotten son of his father Boaz. Jesus was the Only begotten Son of the Father God. Obed was given by his father to restore when Ruth places him on Naomi’s lap – to restore her and it was given to restore, resurrect and redeem. Jesus was given by His Father to restore, resurrect and redeem. Obed’s name means “servant”. Jesus came as the suffering servant. Obed was the father of Jesse. Jesus was the root of Jesse. Obed was an Israelite from the line of Judah – also Pharez. Jesus was an Israelite from the line of Judah – also Pharez. Obed was an agent of redemption. Jesus was the One and Only agent of redemption. Obed was the son of Naomi and the son of Boaz. You may be asking – how come Naomi is the mother of Obed, and not Ruth? We need to back track to get the answer to this.
Back in those days the kinsman redeemer would have to marry the widow and give her a son to carry the name of the family forward. The problem was that Naomi was no longer of child bearing age – she had long passed that. So it begs the question – who would the kinsman redeemer marry? The answer was Ruth. Therefore, the son born to Ruth would be as if it was a son born to Naomi. That is why we read in verse 14 And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel.
Now this son of Naomi and the son of Boaz and the son of Ruth as well, would point to in its type Jesus Christ. Jesus being the Son of Man and the Son of God – the dual nature. He was fully God and He was fully Man. The body of Obed was made from both a Jew and a Gentile. The Body of Jesus is made up of both Jew and Gentile, and in Christ there is neither Jew nor Greek, nor Gentile………
NAOMI & RUTH: Here we have a picture of the Jew and the Gentile. Woven into the fabric of this typology is a picture of the pre tribulation rapture of the Bride of Christ, and the restoration of Israel as the elect of God. When the fullness of the Gentiles comes in and is complete – when the trumpets sound – the rapture of the Church happens, then God at that time – once the Bride of the Church has been removed and the time of the Gentiles is complete, God will then focus His attention on Israel – His chosen people.
Romans 11:25-26 25 For I would not brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the times of the Gentiles be come in. 26 And so all Israel shall be saved; as it is written, There shall come out of Zion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob.
That is why and the purpose of the tribulation. That is why they (Israel) enter into the seven year tribulation, because the purpose of the tribulation is for the salvation of the Jewish Nation. God is not through with Israel yet. There is still one week or seven years prophesied by Daniel. Sixty nine weeks have been fulfilled – there remains but one week (7 years). The remaining week is when the LORD focuses His attention on Israel.
Daniel 9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy.
God is not through with the Jews, because He has a covenant with the Jews. God also has a covenant with we the Gentiles. His covenant with Israel is an everlasting covenant.
Ruth 1:19 – This is a type of the two of them – Naomi and Ruth. Jew and Gentile as a picture of the coming together in this place called Bethlehem.
Ruth 1:22 – They came to Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest. Even to this present day, the Jews when they celebrate the feasts of harvest, they read the Book of Ruth – about Naomi a Jew and Ruth a Gentile coming together at the harvest.
Ruth 2:2-3 – Boaz as a kinsman redeemer meets Ruth. He can buy back the field belonging to Elimelech and marry the Gentile bride of this man’s son, to carry on the family name of his brother (Deuteronomy 25:5-10).
Ruth 4:13 – Boaz marries Ruth. The field that he bought back that had to be redeemed is a picture of a type of the world that is bought back by the next of kin – kinsman – a type of Jesus Christ who became Man – kins-man. Kin; next to kin – next to us. He is the kinsman who became one of us – next to us. Kinsman – fully God and fully Man – our next of kin to be our Kinsman Redeemer – then out of His love for His Gentile bride a son is born in Bethlehem.
Ruth 4:14 – Boaz so loved Ruth, that he gave her a son so she would not be left without the seed, keeping the name throughout all of Israel.
Ruth 4:16-17 – The child born in Bethlehem is seen as Jesus who is now embraced in the lap of Naomi who is Israel. Israel is going to yet future embrace the Son – the Messiah born in Bethlehem that they first rejected when He first came. Ruth a type of the Bride of Christ is not seen again in the Scriptures once Naomi – a type of Israel embraces the son – a type of the Messiah born in Bethlehem.
The son born to Boaz and Ruth became Naomi’s. He was accepted as Naomi’s. So Naomi (Israel) embraces Obed who would be David’s grandfather. Obed was king David’s grandfather, and as such he would be the line from which Jesus the Son of the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. Ruth in giving her son born in Bethlehem to Naomi is a picture of Israel prior to and never heard from again once she does – it is a picture and a type of the pre-tribulation rapture. How is that possible you may ask?
Well Ruth – a type of the Church follows Naomi – a type of Israel, which is how she became joined to Boaz – as a type of Christ. Boaz takes Ruth who leaves all behind such that she does not go through the yet future tribulation that is still upon the entire land. Remember, the Book of Ruth took place during the time of the judges when every man did what they felt was right in their eyes. This Book of Ruth took place during a type of tribulation – that is Israel rejecting God and doing whatever seemed right in their own eyes. That is Israel today! When Jesus takes the Bride out of here, the Jews will go through the seven year tribulation. The tribulation does not start until the Church is removed, and the Antichrist will not be revealed until the Church is removed.
BOAZ & JESUS – Boaz the kinsman redeemer had to be a family member – he had to be related to Elimelech. With Jesus, He added humanity to His eternal deity so that He could be our Kinsman Redeemer – related to us. Man next to us – Man kin – Kinsman so as to redeem us as fully God and fully Man. With Boaz, the kinsman redeemer had the duty of buying family members out of slavery. Back in those days, if you became indebted and you had sold all your land and all your possessions and you did not have anything else to sell, you would have to sell yourself into slavery to your debtor – the one to whom you owed the debt. So this kinsman redeemer would buy you back after being sold, after selling yourself into slavery.
Jesus redeemed us from slavery to sin and death in that we were bought with His blood shed in our stead. When Boaz the kinsman redeemer had the duty of buying back the land that had been forfeited – we become indebted and we have to forfeit the title deeds to the land because of our indebtedness. With Jesus – He will redeem the field/world – the field is the world that the first Adam forfeited over to Satan when he signed the title deed over to Satan. Jesus sells everything – He gave up everything – even His own life to buy the field – not for the field, but for the pearl of great price that is in the field.
Matthew 13: 45-46 45 Again the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls. 46 Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.
Remember, Boaz only spoke about redeeming his bride. He was not interested in the land/field. He already has so many fields. He was a very wealthy landowner. Boaz wanted that pearl of great price in that field – Ruth the bride. Jesus also wants the pearl of great price – us – the Bride so He’ll redeem the world so that He can get the Bride,
This world is under the control of Satan, and it will be until the Millennium when the earth will be restored to its former state prior to the fall when sin entered the world.
Boaz as a kinsman redeemer to Ruth was not motivated by self-interest; he was motivated by his love for Ruth. Jesus us our Kinsmen Redeemer was also not motivated by self-interest, rather His motivation for redeeming us was the agape love for us. Boaz as a kinsman redeemer to Ruth had to have a plan. He had a plan when he went to the city gates to deal with the law of this nearer kinsman redeemer. Boaz had a plan to redeem Ruth unto himself. So too, Jesus had a plan to redeem us by dying on the cross, which according to:
1 Corinthians 1:18 is foolishness to those who are perishing, but power to us being saved.
Boaz as a kinsman redeemer to Ruth provides her a glorious destiny, just as Jesus our Redeemer provides us a glorious and eternal destiny.
BOAZ; JESUS & the FATHER – There is also a contrast between Boaz, the Saviour Jesus and the Father. Boaz was a wealthy land owner. The Saviour was not wealthy. He had no place to lay His head. The Father – the earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof (Psalm 24:1). Boaz was a relatively old man. Jesus was a relatively young Man. The Father is the Ancient of Days (Daniel 7:9). Boaz was the ruler of many servants. The Saviour Himself was a servant. The Father rules over all servants. Boaz gave his son to redeem. The Saviour gave Himself to redeem. The Father gave His Only begotten Son to redeem. Boaz – his name means is strength. The Saviour means “I am forgiveness”. The Father – in Him is strength and power – all power. Boaz was an Israelite from the line of Judah. The Saviour is the Israelite from the Lion of the tribe of Judah. The Father has no beginning and no end.
THE MEANING OF THE NAMES FOUND IN THE BOOK OF RUTH:
Elimelech – God is my king, as a type of Israel who declares and acknowledges their God as their King.
Naomi – Pleasant and is a type of the redeemed Israel.
Mara – Bitter and is a type of unleavened bread.
Orpah – Stiff necked and or back of neck and is a type of those who stiffen their neck and turn back from following the God of Israel as Orpah did in turning back to Moab from Naomi
Ruth – Friendship and is a type of the Gentile Bride as a friend of God.
Obed – Servant or one serving and is a type of Jesus Christ who came as a servant the suffering servant to serve.
Bethlehemites – Residents of the House of bread and it’s a type of these faithful Israelites trusting God to provide even in a famine or in a tribulation in their trusting of the Lord of the harvest.
Mahlon – Unhealthy and sickly and is a type of the unhealthy fruit of an unhealthy Israel.
Chilion – Ailing, perishing and wasting away and is a type of the perishing fruit of an unfruitful Israel.
Nearer kinsman – No mane given. It is absent from the narrative, The name is not given and is a type of the law that cannot ultimately redeem nor save, which is why no name is given – such that you can’t be saved by the law. Now we can contrast that with this, that the name of Jesus
Acts 4:12 – For there is no other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Only Jesus can save him. No name for the nearer kinsman is a type of the law and the ten elders with him cannot be saved.
Threshing floor – the threshing floor points to the meaning of separating the grain and it is a type of the Throne of God – the Seat of Judgement where finally and ultimately at the end of the harvest – the wheat and the tares are separated, and that is what it points to.
Pharez – Breakthrough – is a type of Jesus Christ who breaks through the tomb as Pharez did the womb.
THE FEASTS OF HARVEST
The feasts of harvest are also known as first fruits. Leviticus 23:9-24 gives an account of all the feasts. Here is how one was to celebrate the feasts. The feasts of first fruit were celebrated on one day and it was the first day of the week – Sunday – Resurrection Day. Jesus resurrected on the first day of the week, and in so doing He fulfilled the feasts of first fruits in the resurrection.
This feast was celebrated at the beginning of the first barley harvest with a wave offering, which is when Ruth gleaned from Boaz’s field. It then brings us to the feasts of week – also known as harvest. It fell on the first day of the week after seven weeks. Seven times seven is forty nine and the day after the seventh week = the fiftieth day. It was the fiftieth day and that is why it would later be called the feasts of Pentecost. The day of Pentecost and this feast is a type of the birth of the Church, and it happened on the day of Pentecost.
Fifty days after leaving Egypt the Israelites arrived at Mount Sinai and with fire they heard the tongue of the LORD as Moses came down with the law. When Moses sees that the people have broken God’s law, he in turn breaks the two tablets that contain God’s law and on that very day – fifty days after the exodus out of Egypt when the law came down, 3,000 people died.
Forward fifty days after the resurrection it is the day of Pentecost. The disciples arrive not at Mount Sinai, but Mount Zion to the upper room for the celebration of this feast. What happened here? Tongues of fire comes down in the Spirit with the gospel and the Good News that comes down and all the sins of man have been paid in full by virtue of Christ’s death and resurrection from the dead – redeeming man. Man with us. God with us – our next of kin – our Kinsman Redeemer and when the Word of God was heard from God, instead of 3,000 people dying in one day – on that day, there are 3,000 people who were saved on the day – the day of Pentecost.
Exodus 32:28 And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.
Acts 2:41 Then they gladly received his word and were baptised: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
Putting the typology together this is what we see:
We come back to the typology found in the feasts of Pentecost having to do with the two loaves that were offered as a wave offering. The two loaves were waved up and down and to the left and to the right in the shape of a cross. However, there is a problem. The two loaves that were brought together had leaven – a type of sin. Just as the two tablets of the law coming down together in Moses’ hands were born to show our sin. This is a type of two people’s – two loaves. Two tablets. Jews and Gentiles who were brought together – both having a sin nature by virtue of the cross of Jesus Christ when that sin was paid in full and that is why there was a wave offering in the shape of a cross, and that is also why you had the Passover in the shape of a cross. Sin brings death, and the Spirit brings life – the Church or the Gentile Bride is brought to life and fulfils the law by Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection.
Another point to this feast is how it is gleaned from the harvest points to our redemption by our Kinsman Redeemer. At the barley harvest they were not to glean all to the ends of the corners of the field, but they were to leave for the poor as part of the harvest and so the first cut in this harvest was to be insufficient so as to leave behind enough for the poor in order for them to glean a second time. So too is the first birth as sinners insufficient leaving us poor, which required the second birth – a second cut for redemption, which is what Ruth gleaning in the field of her kinsman redeemer pictures.
It all comes together – the barley harvest; the wave offering; a picture of the cross; the type of the Christ; the redemption of the Bride……..it all comes together.
The Book of Ruth is a true story of redemption and as such it is our story of truth in Jesus Christ who is our redemption.
He is the way. He is the truth. He is the life. AMEN! AMEN!! AMEN!!!
THE A. B. C TO SALVATION IN CHRIST JESUS
Dear Reader – IF you have not accepted Christ Jesus as Lord and Saviour of your life – it is our belief that time is running out. To receive and accept Jesus as Lord is as simple as A. B. C.
A – ACCEPT that you are a sinner, and you need the blood of Jesus to cleanse you of your sins.
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
B – BELIEVE in you heart that Jesus is the Son of God and He came and died on the cross to take away the sins of Mankind.
John 3:15-18 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
C – CONFESS – Confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord.
Romans 10:9-11 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
